Fixing “user-scalable=no / maximum-scale” in Shopify: let shoppers zoom

A one-line fix in layout/theme.liquid. Older themes and some apps block pinch-to-zoom on phones.

Found on 19.1% of 3,151 Shopify homepages we tested in our 2026 study.

What the message means

The viewport meta tag stops shoppers from zooming in on their phone. People with low vision rely on zoom to read prices and product details.

How to fix it

Open layout/theme.liquid and replace the viewport tag with the standard version:

<!-- before -->
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1, user-scalable=no">

<!-- after -->
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width,initial-scale=1">

If it comes back

Some apps rewrite the tag with JavaScript to stop input fields from zooming on iOS. The better fix for that is a 16 px minimum font size on inputs, which stops the automatic zoom without blocking manual zoom.
